Apple is said to be entering the virtual reality market with its own headset next year. The in-house model is to rely on laser measurement to capture space and the production planning is already in place, according to a report.
For years there have been rumors about Apple’s own VR headset, for example in the form of a patent application that appeared in 2014 or the prospect of a final product with 8K resolution for the past year. As is well known, nothing has come of this so far, but the matter is now to become more specific, as reported by the Chinese news site Chinatimes.com, citing analyst Yang Weilun from JPMorgan Chase (via Google translator).
According to Yang Weilun, there are signs that Apple could launch several headset products with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the first quarter of 2022. According to this, production is planned for the fourth quarter of 2021 and deliveries are to take place in the first quarter of 2022, with seven Taiwanese manufacturers having entered the supply chain, including TSMC for the chip, Largan for the camera lenses and Pegatron for the assembly. According to the information, 1 to 1.5 million sets of parts and components required for the products are to be stored.
Apple VR headset with LiDAR and expensive
The design of the Apple headset should be very similar to that of other VR headsets on the market, with six lenses and an optical radar (LiDAR, “light detection and ranging”) for capturing depth information by means of laser pulses, such as is used, for example already knows from the iPad Pro or in geographic surveying technology. In the case of the VR headset from Apple, the user’s location in the room should be recorded and improved compared to conventional solutions.
According to the analyst, Apple is targeting the high-end area with its headset, which is why the price may be more expensive than VR headsets currently on the market. The cost of the components alone could therefore exceed $ 500. Bloomberg had only reported on this at the end of January and reported a sales price of 900 US dollars.
