On Mars, the mini helicopter “Ingenuity” sent an initial status report to the control center in Pasadena, California.
Nasa evaluated this in a message as proof of the functionality of the aircraft, which weighs around two kilograms. Now it is important to quickly charge the six batteries to keep the electronics warm. “Ingenuity” is still on board the rover “Perseverance”, which touched down on the Red Planet on Thursday. In the coming months, the helicopter is to explore Mars from a bird’s eye view. It would be the first flight of a helicopter constructed on Earth over the surface of another planet.
The aim of the mission is to search for traces of earlier microbial life on Mars and to research the planet’s climate and geology.
