Dortmund made a false start against the six-time Europa League winner at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Susu was not attacked enough just outside the penalty area, was able to pull, and his shot was unfortunately deflected into his own goal by Mats Hummels (7th). BVB was not deterred by this and showed a strong reaction two days after it became known that Gladbach’s Marco Rose will be the new Dortmund coach from the summer.
This time, the Spaniard Mahmoud Dahoud left too much space to prepare the ball and hit the corner from 20 meters (19th). Haaland had served him before, it was the start of his new gala performance. The 20-year-old grabbed the leather just after the center line, pulled towards the goal and completed the action after a one-two with Jadon Sancho sliding himself in the best goal-getter manner.
Haaland continues to hunt for records
Shortly before the break, the Norwegian shot into the far corner after a counterattack and preparatory work by Marco Reus. Haaland has always scored in his five season appearances in the CL, always twice in the most recent three games. In his career he now has 18 CL goals, which had not been achieved in the first 13 games by any player before. In competitive games, he also increased his impressive season record to 25 goals in 24 games.
In the second half, the guests were mainly satisfied with managing the lead. Sevilla became more dangerous on goal, but initially had bad luck with an Oscar Rodriguez free kick to the rod (74th). In the finish, however, the pressure was even stronger. Luuk de Jong took a Rodriguez free kick directly at the far corner and made the connection goal (84th).
But nothing changed about the first defeat after nine competitive games in a row. Dortmund can even afford a 1-0 defeat in the second leg on March 9th. During his premiere as a coach in the CL, BVB coach Edin Terzic also got the certainty of how things will continue for him from the summer. “Edin will stay with us in the next season in the coaching team and go back to his old role as Kotrainer”, said BVB sports director Michael Zorc.
Juventus is threatened with early retirement
Juventus Turin and superstar Cristiano Ronaldo lost 2-1 (0-1) at FC Porto and are therefore under pressure in the second leg on March 9th. After all, Federico Chiesa saved the Serie A club from an even worse starting position with his late goal (82nd). Juve had already failed in the first knockout round against Olympique Lyon last season.
The game at the Estadio do Dragao started badly for the Italians. After a minute, Rodrigo Betancur played a too short back pass to Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesny. Porto’s Mehdi Taremi straddled in between and took the lead. In the second half, too, the guests made a false start. This time it wasn’t even 30 seconds before Moussa Marega scored the second goal for Porto.
By contrast, there was hardly anything to be seen of the Turiners, and Ronaldo hardly appeared in his Portuguese homeland. In the first 45 minutes, Porto’s goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin was checked only once in a shot by Adrien Rabot (41st). In the second round there were hardly any chances until Chiesa scored.
