The Viennese defeated Metalurg Skopje and can book the round of 16 against Fenix Toulouse.
In their last home game of the European League group stage, the Fivers Margareten preserved their chance of the last 16 with a runaway win. The Viennese outclassed a weakened HC Metalurg Skopje on Tuesday with 45:30 (22:13) and can fix the promotion with a win on Tuesday at the French club Fenix Toulouse and Schützenhilfe von Skopje or the Russian club Medvedi Chekhov.
The Viennese were in the lead from the start and were ahead with ten goals for the first time in the 24th minute. Less than eight points, the lead didn’t melt away even during a small phase of weakness in the second section. The game was very different from the 33:33 in the first direct duel with the North Macedonians. With the 45 goals, the Fivers set a new goal record in the European League.
“I’m proud of my team. You have to say that the opponent was weakened and the result was correspondingly high. But I think the result is okay. We had the game under control from the very first minute, were able to go through our game until half-time, “summed up Fivers coach Peter Eckl.
As a reward, they managed to jump to fourth place in the group A table, as Toulouse will only meet Chekhov Medvedi at home on Wednesday. The French, with whom the Fivers are fighting for a place in the round of 16, have a total of four games left – twice against Medwedi, once against Skopje and the game against the Viennese. If the French lose at least one game and the Fivers win in Toulouse, the Austrian club is in the round of 16.
“Of course we’re hoping for a final against Toulouse next week. If we get the chance to advance to the round of 16, we obviously want to take it,” said six-time goalscorer Lukas Hutecek.
