The election of a new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church begins today in Belgrade. Patriarch Irinej died at the end of November at the age of 90 as a result of the coronavirus. Until then, parts of the Orthodox clergy had taken the virus lightly. This has changed now. The election does not take place, as usual, in a chapel at the seat of the Patriarch, but in the crypt of the Church of St. Sava. The eldest of the bishops is in the chair, but Bishop Lavrentije was hospitalized the day before the “Holy Bishops’ Meeting (Sveti Archirejskij Sabor) began; therefore the bishop of Srme, Vasilije, now presides.
